SPOT VARNISH: BRING CONTRAST TO YOUR COVERS

Spot varnish Spot varnish – An effect that depends on the ground

Spot varnish lays a layer, gloss or matt, on selected areas of the cover only. The contrast between the varnished surfaces and the rest brings out a title, an image or a texture.

Varnishing an area, not the whole surface

A dedicated file — a layer in solid black — indicates the areas to be varnished. The varnish is then applied and cured, as a thin layer (2D) or as a thick, tactile layer (3D) that simulates relief without an embossing die.

We systematically check that layer: line weights, spread relative to the print, overprint. A misregistered varnish shows on every copy of the run.

An effect that depends on the ground

Spot varnish only makes full sense on a contrasting ground: a gloss varnish applied over matt or soft touch lamination makes the title or the illustration shine. The same varnish applied over gloss lamination becomes almost invisible.

Spot varnish can also be combined with debossing or embossing, to create plays of light and relief on a cover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 2D and 3D varnish?

2D lays a thin coat: it plays on gloss and reflections.
3D lays a thickness you can feel with a finger, creating genuine relief.

Should the cover be laminated first?

It is strongly advised, especially with a matt or soft touch lamination: the contrast between the velvety background and the glossy area is what creates the effect, and the film protects the print.

What file should be supplied?

Your four-colour file, plus a separate shape file in which the areas to be varnished are solid in a 100% spot colour. The register between the two should be carefully checked before printing.

Does spot varnish replace lamination?

No: it is applied only to selected areas and does not protect the cover. The two finishes complement each other, they are not alternatives.
